I can allegedly change the user agent via fetchUrl.curlOpts, but... this is deep, deep within nixpkgs.

Exit, Voice, and What Comes After
Albert Hirschman’s "Exit, Voice, and Loyalty" has become one of those books whose central distinction long ago escaped the book itself. When an organization or institution begins to fail us, we can leave it, or remain and try to change it. Loyalty complicates the relationship between those possibilities by holding exit at bay and giving voice more time and incentive to work.
But what happens when getting the institution back on the track is not the objective...because the track itself has become the problem? There seems to be a difference between trying to make an institution behave differently and trying to make a different institutional arrangement possible.

The second one comes with a permanent increase in the price of consumer goods for the USA and with no country in the Middle East trusting the US for defence, which means an end to any preferential pricing and access to oil.
Even If the US public forgets, China won’t, and that’s going to cost a lot in the longer term. And when those consequences come back to bite the US public, the right-wing press will happily blame and Democrat who looked soft on Iran.

That ship has already sailed. The rest of the world already sees the US as an unreliable ally and business partner and the only reason it still has the standing it does now is that changing this stuff takes time. But the era of the USA as a world leader is over.
Pulling out immediately would actually improve American credibility because it would show that the accountability mechanisms haven't completely failed.

@andypiper @lpoolmakefest It had surprised me just how little promotion I had seen about VCF GB. For an event that really should be a big deal for folks here, I would expect to see loads of chatter about it. I guess maybe it was inevitable then.
@rc2014 evidently (per FB) the organiser was surprised by requirements from the venue, and had to cancel 2 weeks from kick off.
Like you I’ve also been baffled by the lack of major promotion (and I’d suggested places they could have shared it, like Hackaday etc, which they ignored). Oh well.
I was attracted by the name and reputation of the VCF events in the US, but that seems completely misplaced.

It's interesting that Google's compliance with non-law government directives regarding the names of bodies of water is so blazingly fast, because, they say, it's their responsibility under the law and they're just following orders...
...and yet their compliance with laws regarding labor rights, collective bargaining, sexual harrassment, and workforce diversity was and is glacial, despite being actual laws.
